It's January so Happy New Year! Welcome to some new TV shows while awards season kicks into high gear with the 81st annual Golden Globes on CBS and the 75th annual Primetime Emmys on Fox on January 7 and January 15, respectively.
Ever since Fox moved it's then mega-hit, American Idol, to January to get past the baseball and football seasons in 2011, January has served as a sort of a second fall launch. This year, however, pickings are a bit slim after the writers and actors strikes, which finally wrapped up in November after the actors agreed to a deal with the studios.
Still, there are some interesting offerings on the slate, starting with Marvel's Echo, on Disney Plus on Wednesday, January 10. The series stars Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez aka Echo, a deaf Native American with some serious fighting skills, and Vincent D'Onofrio as her adopted father, now adversary, Wilson “Kingpin” Fix. All five episodes of Echo will drop simultaneously on Hulu and Disney Plus, marking the first time Disney has done that.

On Sunday, January 14, Jodie Foster stars and executive produces HBO's latest iteration of True Detective: Night Country, which last aired in 2019 with season three starring Mahershala Ali. Season four is set in Ennis, Alaska, a far cry from season three's Arkansas, and co-stars Kali Reis as Foster's fellow detective Evangeline Navarro.
Other movie stars are taking a turn on TV with Clive Owen starring in AMC's Monsieur Spade, also premiering January 14, and Nicole Kidman starring in Prime Video's Expats on January 26.
At the end of the month, FX has Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, which seems to be a new take on an old housewives tale with a cast that includes Tom Hollander, Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chole Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore and Molly Ringwald.
