Imaginary Forces’ main titles for Apple TV Plus’ world-shifting series Dark Matter are like playing a game of Tetris with cinder blocks instead of digital shapes. The blocks keep moving and switching, opening a portal here, closing another there. The sequence is a nod to the show’s plotline, which is about a man who finds his reality stolen out from under him by none other than … him.

“The main title of Dark Matter symbolizes the constantly shifting challenges that Jason faces as he journeys to return home,” says Imaginary Forces Creative Director Ronnie Koff in a statement. “These obstacles and changing elements form a complex puzzle for our hero to unravel. The sequence features a continuous camera movement that takes us on a loop around a box, which is ultimately revealed at the end.”
The interlocking visuals, reminiscent of a Rubik's cube, symbolize the trial-and-error process of weaving worlds together as they collide. Incorporating warm palettes and dynamic composition,s the team worked alongside author and showrunner Blake Crouch to craft a sequence that tells a story within each frame.
Dark Matter is based on Crouch’s best-selling novel and stars Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga and Jimmi Simpson. It debuted on Apple TV Plus on May 8.
