Walt Disney Animation Studios dropped the teaser trailer for animated movie Moana 2 on Wednesday and by Thursday, it had racked up 178 million views, making it the most-watched trailer of all time for an animated movie. The previous record holder was Inside Out 2 with 157 million views in 24 hours, followed by Frozen 2 with 116 million views and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 with 113 million. Views are across TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.
Moana, which is set in the South Pacific, features Auli’i Cravalho voicing the title role and Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui. It debuted in theaters in 2016 but has had a long afterlife, becoming the most streamed movie across all platforms last year, according to Nielsen.
Moana 2 will hit theaters ahead of Thanksgiving weekend on November 27. While this year’s Memorial Day box office had the lowest grosses in 26 years at $128 million total, the November box office is shaping up to be a smash, if viewer interest in Moana 2 and Universal’s Wicked – starring Cyntha Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey – is any indication.
Moana 2 is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino. Moana 2 features music by Grammy-winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy-nominee Opetaia Foaʻi, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
