FX upended the Emmy race on Wednesday, nabbing 93 nods behind only Netflix and beating perennial Emmy leader HBO, which came in third with 91.
FX is in good position to win both best drama for Shōgun, which scored 25 nominations on Wednesday, and The Bear, which broke 30 Rock’s record for most nominations for a comedy with 23. FX also was mentioned for such series as Fargo, Reservation Dogs, What We Do in the Shadows and Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.
Netflix’s top contenders include The Crown and 3 Body Problem in drama and Baby Reindeer and Ripley in the limited-series categories. HBO/Max, which had several series sidelined in 2023 and 2024, is contending with The Gilded Age, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Hacks.
If it feels like the Emmys just happened, that’s because the 2023 Emmys ended up airing in January after being held off while Hollywood resolved last year’s labor strikes. The strikes also kept many typical Emmy contenders out of production.
Besides Shōgun, other shows nominated for best drama are Netflix’s The Crown and 3 Body Problem, Prime Video’s Fallout and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Max’s The Gilded Age, Apple TV Plus’ The Morning Show and Slow Horses. On the comedy side, besides The Bear, other nominees are ABC’s Abbott Elementary, Max’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and Hacks, FX’s Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows, Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and Apple TV Plus’ Palm Royale.
Nominated for outstanding limited series are Netflix’s Baby Reindeer and Ripley, FX’s Fargo, Apple TV Plus’ Lessons in Chemistry and Max’s True Detective: Night Country.
Lead actors from five of the seven nominated dramas got nods: Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s Donald Glover, Fallout’s Walton Goggins, Slow Horses’ Gary Oldman, Shōgun’s Hiroyuki Sanada and The Crown’s Dominic West. Idris Elba also was nominated for Apple TV Plus’ Hijack.
All of the nominated lead actresses came from nominated dramas: The Morning Show’s Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, The Gilded Age’s Carrie Coon, Mr. and Mrs. Smith’s Maya Erskine, Shōgun’s Anna Sawai and The Crown’s Imelda Staunton.
The Morning Show dominated the supporting actor and actress races with Billy Crudup, who has previously won an Emmy in this role, Mark Duplass, and Jon Hamm, who also is nominated for Fargo, Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman and Holland Taylor all snagging mentions.
The supporting actors were joined by Shōgun’s Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira, along with Slow Horses’ Jack Lowden and The Crown’s Jonathan Pryce, who scored a second nomination for playing Lowden’s grandfather in Slow Horses. The actresses were joined by Gilded Age’s Christine Baranski and The Crown’s Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville.
Nominated for best actor in a comedy were The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White, last year’s winner, along with What We Do in the Shadows’ Matt Berry, Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David, Only Murders in the Building’s Steve Martin and Martin Short and Reservation Dogs’ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.
Comedy’s lead actress nominees were Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson, The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Only Murders in the Building’s Selena Gomez, Loot’s Maya Rudolph, Hacks’ Jean Smart and Palm Royale’s Kristen Wiig. Brunson won the Emmy for best actress in a comedy in January, while Edebiri was named best supporting actress in a comedy. Smart was named best actress in a comedy for her role as comedian Deborah Vance in Max’s Hacks in both 2021 and 2022. Rudolph also is nominated three other times this year, including for guest-hosting the show on which she formerly was a regular: Saturday Night Live. Rudolph’s SNL cohort, Wiig, also is nominated for guest-hosting SNL.
Comedic supporting actor nominees are last year’s winner, The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, as well as his castmate Lionel Boyce. Moss-Bachrach and Boyce both were featured in their own episodes – “Forks” and “Honeydew,” respectively in The Bear’s critically adored second season. Also nominated are Hacks’ Paul W. Downs, who is also an executive producer and writer on the show, as well as Only Murders in the Building’s Paul Rudd, Abbott Elementary’s Tyler James Williams and Saturday Night Live’s Bowen Yang.
Nominated for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy are Palm Royale’s Carol Burnett, The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas, Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder, Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph, who won the Emmy for this role in 2022, and Only Murders in the Building’s Meryl Streep.
Actors nominated for limited or anthology series include Fellow Travelers’ Matt Bomer, Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd, Fargo’s Jon Hamm, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans’ Tom Hollander and Ripley’s Andrew Scott.
Actresses in this category are led by two Oscar winners: True Detective: Night Country’s Jodie Foster and Lessons in Chemistry’s Brie Larson, respectively. Also nominated are Fargo’s Juno Temple, Griselda’s Sofia Vergara, and Feud: Capote vs The Swans’ Naomi Watts.
Supporting actors in a limited series include Robert Downey Jr., who is nominated for playing several roles in Max’s The Sympathizer and is just coming off an Oscar win for Oppenheimer.
