In 1865, 153 Welsh people sailed to the remote Patagonian province of Chubut to find new lives. After traveling across the Atlantic ocean for months, they arrived to find an arid landscape where they literally had to build those lives from scratch. But today, a small Welsh community still thrives there. And among them are hardcore fans of Welsh football team Wrexham AFC.
Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, which produces FX’s Welcome to Wrexham, partnered with United Airlines to transport five of those fans to Wales to experience a Wrexham game for themselves at the Racecourse, known locally as STōK Cae Ras. While there, they also attended the Welsh cultural holiday of Saint David’s Day, which the community also celebrates in Patagonia, hit up a local pub and waved their Patagonian flags.
Maximum Effort and United created a 30-minute documentary about the trip and promoted it within Thursday night’s episode of Welcome to Wrexham, on social media platforms and on United’s website.
In 2020, Reynolds and Rob McElhenney teamed up to purchase Wrexham AFC’s Red Dragons in an attempt to turn the club’s fate around. After spending 15 years in the National League, the team was finally promoted back into the English Football League for the 2022-23 season. Season three is all about watching the team try to advance that position even further. Such team stars as Gambian wingback Jacob Mendy and English forward Paul Mullin make appearances in the documentary.
Welcome to Wrexham is executive produced by McElhenney, Reynolds, Josh Drisko, Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nick Frenkel, George Dewey and Boardwalk Pictures’ Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Sarina Roma and Andy Thomas. Welcome to Wrexham is produced by More Better Productions, Maximum Effort Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment and Boardwalk Pictures.
Welcome to Wrexham airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX and streams the next day on Hulu.
