In Apple TV Plus’ new series, The New Look, the elegance of haute couture stands next to the bedlam of World War II. Imaginary Forces’ main titles for the show reflects that contrast, with images of artistic hand-sewn couture juxtaposed with the manufacture of rigid Nazi uniforms. At the center is Paris, home of the great fashion houses. Dior is represented by Christian Dior’s favorite flower, the lily of the valley, while Chanel is symbolized with the more exuberant camellia, a regularly used motif of Coco Chanel.
The sequence was overseen by Imaginary Forces Creative Director Alan Williams, who worked with a seamstress to develop the live-action sewing scenes.
“The brilliant design and craft of Coco Chanel and Christian Dior couldn’t be more potent. But as much as I wanted fashion to play a role, there came with it a challenge: how can fashion reflect danger, rivalry, and rebirth? By filming and animating seamstresses, Dior-clad runway models, Nazi flags ripping, and blossoms blooming, we celebrate through poetic abstraction Dior and Chanel’s fight for survival, craft, tension, and influence -- the drama that is The New Look,” Williams said in a statement.
