Disney and National Geographic are bringing Earth Month to life throughout April with a global cross-platform campaign, titled ourHome, running across the entertainment company’s linear, digital and streaming assets.
The campaign kicks off with an anchor spot narrated by Morgan Freeman.
“Our world is an amazing, epic, fragile, wonder-filled place. It’s our home and we have the power to love and look after it,” Freeman says in the spot. “This Earth Day, join National Geographic and Disney and take action to protect, restore and celebrate our planet.”
Disney-owned National Geographic, which has been one of the world’s leading natural history brands for 136 years, will debut the latest installment of its Emmy-winning Secrets Of franchise, with this iteration focusing on the octopus. Secrets of the Octopus, narrated by Paul Rudd, debuts on Earth Day, April 22.
“National Geographic is one of the most beloved and trusted global brands with a combined social media following of more than 750 million people. We harness this reach to remind people that the world is an amazing and miraculous place, filled with beauty, awe and wonder,” said Courteney Monroe, president, National Geographic. “This Earth Month we hope by sharing this passion we can also inspire others to protect, restore and celebrate our home.”
Also on Earth Day, Disney Plus will premiere Disneynature’s new feature film, Tiger, which follows young tigress and new mom, Ambar, as she raises her litter of cubs in the remote mountain forests of India. Tiger is narrated by Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
As part of the film’s release, the Disney Conservation Fund is donating to organizations that work to conserve tigers across Asia.
Besides those two new series, Disney Plus and Nat Geo have created a curated hub where audiences can source content that celebrates the “beauty, awe and wonder of our planet.” This will include an ABC News and Nat Geo-produced two-hour special on the total eclipse of the sun taking place on April 8.
Other programs located on the site include Queens, A Real Bug’s Life, Secrets of the Elephants, Incredible Animal Journeys and the full collection of Disneynature features, including Polar Bear, Dolphin Reef and Penguin. Other ourHOME-themed programming will air across National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Mundo, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Freeform, FX and FXX.
On Wednesday, April 3, Disney and Nat Geo will head to Hollywood’s Greek Theater to show a special screening of feature documentary Jane, about English anthropologist and primatologist Jane Goodall. In honor of Goodall’s 90th birthday, Disney is donating to her Roots and Shoots program, which works to empower young people to create a better world for humans, animals and the environment.
Online, both Disney and Nat Geo have produced digital destinations to showcase all of their Earth Month efforts. There’s also a Disney Plus National Geographic Expeditions Sweepstakes where U.S. subscribers to Disney Plus can enter for a chance to win a 10-day expedition for two to the Galapagos Islands. The sweeps entry period runs from April 15-30 with more details to be announced.
"Disney is committed to putting possibility into practice and inspiring optimism for a brighter, cleaner and more environmentally sustainable future,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, vice president, environmental sustainability, The Walt Disney Company, also in a statement. "We hope the ourHOME campaign with Nat Geo helps bring greater awareness of the beauty and majesty of our planet to audiences everywhere."
