“Long before there was reality TV shows, there was American Gladiators,” begins The Shop's spot for ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary on the TV phenomenon, which aired in syndication from 1989 until 1997.
A combination of pro wrestling and obstacle-course navigation and the precursor to NBC's American Ninja Warrior, American Gladiators featured contestants competing in such contests as Joust, Powerball and Swingshot. The spot features such stars from the era as Elektra, Gemini, Malibu and Sabre.
“It was a given that they were all on steroids,” says one interviewee during the spot.
