Steve Woo has joined Los Angeles- and Vancouver-based independent creative studio The Embassy as head of studio.

Woo comes to The Embassy from Netflix's Scanline VFX. He started his career producing and directing feature films, TV shows and commercials. In 2004, he started a VFX studio in Taiwan and was later hired as Digital Domain's head of studio in China, where he helped manage the company's global studios. He later moved to Digital Domain's Vancouver studio before joining Scanline.

“When the opportunity [to work as] head of studio at The Embassy came up, it was a full circle moment for me,” Woo said in a statement. “All the way back in 2004, I was inspired by its transforming car commercial for Citroën, and shared it with my then team, saying ‘this is the level we need to strive for. Whoever did this is awesome and I hope one day we'll work together.'

“Steve is the ideal fit for The Embassy in this period of expansion,” said Winston Helgason, president and EP of The Embassy, also in a statement. “His past experience running two Digital Domain studios is essential to managing this growth effectively and planning the combined pipeline across three locations in the near future.”

The Embassy is currently working on VFX on the Paramount and Disney Plus series, The Spiderwick Chronicles, among other projects. Woo will also be working on expanding The Embassy's work into Europe with offices in Spain and the Nordics coming soon.

“I brought Steve on to help me handle the day to day operations at The Embassy and allow for more focus on business development, expansion, and sales,” said Helgason. “We've grown by over 30 percent in Vancouver since 2020, and our next two offices will triple our artist capacity over the coming three years. Steve will be helping to manage this growth while upholding the world-class work we've been known for over our 20-year history.”
