Digitally created oil paintings slide into motion graphics in Yu+Co's main titles for Apple TV Plus' thriller, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.
The series, set in New York City in 1979, follows interrogator Rya Goodwin (Seyfried) as she investigates the involvement of Danny Sullivan (Holland) in a shooting.
“The concept of a continuously animating painting was explored to reflect the main character's mental state, presenting a dark and fragmented progression with underlying connections between moments,” wrote Yu +Co in an email. “The initial frames were digital paintings created in black and white, with an emphasis on inexact poses to achieve an authentic and painterly feel.
“The search for the right look for the logo led to handmade, painterly lettering, and color was later added to refine the frames as original digital art. The animators worked closely to ensure fluidity and seamless transitions between poses and scenes, allowing for freedom and leeway in the organic nature of the figures and forms.”

The logo at the end stays with the painterly theme.
“The logo design underwent careful consideration, and we selected a digitally painted version of Gill Sans Nova for a classic and impactful look,” Yu+Co said.
Besides Holland and Seyfriend, The Crowded Room stars Christopher Abbott, Will Chase, Jason Isaacs, Sasha Lane, Emmy Rossum and Thomas Sadowski.
Holland executive produces along with Akiva Goldsman, Alexandra Milchan, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Kornél Mundruczó and Suzanne Heathcote. It's directed by Kornél Mundruczó, Brady Corbet, Mona Fastvold and Alan Taylor.
The Crowded Room premiered on Apple TV Plus on June 9.
