Cleverly spoofing Best Picture nominee Top Gun: Maverick, ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live premiered this three-minute-plus trailer for the 95th annual Oscars on ABC Sunday, March 12. Cut-downs are running on the network leading up to the Big Show, which will be hosted by Kimmel for a third time.
Although Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson and Vice Admiral Solomon “Warlock” Bates (Jon Hamm and Charles Parnell, reprising their roles from the movie) aren't that excited about Kimmel's return, they tell Kimmel that ABC has tasked us with finding a host who is both “unflappable” and “unslappable,” a poke at Will Smith's on-stage slap of presenter Chris Rock last year.
“That's good because I can't get slapped. I cry a lot,” Kimmel says.
Simpson and Bates then go through the very long list of other people that they asked to host, which includes Tina Fey, a child dressed as a pirate and Steve Harvey, who would have been “incredible,” Simpson says.
Billy Crystal also makes a cameo as Double Admiral Crystal, who can't host for a tenth time because he has a dental appointment … on Sunday night.
Los Angeles-based NuContext assisted ABC with the production of the promo, making it two years in a row that NuContext has collaborated with the network to promote the Academy Awards. NuContext produced the 360 campaign, including promo shoot, key art and the EPK and digital package. NuContext Production Designer Marcelle Gravel designed the Top Gun conference room in order to recreate the scene from the movie shot for shot. Jimmy Kimmel's team wrote the scripts.
