In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (evolving to add Native Hawaiians in some instances), HBO Max is partnering with Asian-Pacific content creation platform Gold House to affirm Asian-Pacific storytelling as well as to advance socio-economic outcomes for the Asian-Pacific community.
“We're thrilled to announce our year-long partnership with Gold House to kick off AAPI Heritage Month and honor some of the most influential Asian-Pacific women and non-binary leaders across industries,” said Jackie Gagne, senior vice president of multicultural marketing at Warner Bros. Discovery, in a statement. “We look forward to showcasing the diversity, range, and vibrancy of AAPI communities while promoting exceptional, bold, and emerging talent.”
The partnership kicks off in New York with a panel that includes Olivia Cheng and Dianne Doan of upcoming Max Original series Warrior; author and filmmaker Geena Rocero; VP of HBO Documentary Programming Tina Nguyen, and CMO of Squarespace, Kinjil Mathur. The panel will be moderated by journalist Neha Joy.
Beside the panel, Gold House and HBO Max – soon to be just Max – are partnering on a suite of initiatives to tell authentic Asian-Pacific stories throughout the year.
“We know that the narratives in media shape how we see ourselves and the world around us. That's the power of storytelling — and why accurate representation is critical in every step leading to what's seen on and off screen,” said Jeremy Tran, COO of Gold House, also in a statement.
Max also has created an Asian American and Pacific Islander Voices vertical that can be found on the Max app or website. The updated collection includes a spotlight on AAPI storytellers and characters, as well as curated collections of movies and TV shows featuring AAPI talent. As part of the initiative, Max is highlighting original programming such as Warrior and House of Ho, which feature predominantly AAPI casts, as well as other titles such as Oscar-winning film Parasite and The Menu.
To highlight that content, Max created the above reel, which emphasizes Asian-Pacific storytelling and stars in such shows and movies as Industry, Aquaman, Our Flag Means Death, Starstruck, Sort Of and more.
Additionally, in celebration of the release of Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai on Max, the animated series will be featured in a screening and panel discussion at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Islander Film Festival (LAAPFF) during AAPI Heritage Month.
Finally, HBO Max is partnering with a diverse range of AAPI content creators to highlight their communities, neighborhoods, people or cultural sites. This effort kicks off in May and will be released on Max's social media platforms throughout the month.
