“As a student of history, sometimes to get to the sunshine you've got to ride through a storm,” says former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial in the above trailer for Max's upcoming documentary, Gumbo Coalition.
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,” Janet Murguía, president of Hispanic advocacy organization UnidosUS, quotes Martin Luther King, Jr.
Max's new documentary, Gumbo Coalition, follows two visionary civil rights leaders – former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial and Janet Murguía – as they work to empower Black and Latino communities through four years in America that include the global pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement and the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath.
Directed by two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple, Gumbo Coalition takes viewers on an intimate — and sometimes humorous — journey into Morial's and Murguia's lives, homes, and the family histories that motivate their mission to create a more just and equitable country. The movie digs into such social-justice issues as immigration, education, income disparity and more.
Gumbo Coalition starts streaming on Max on Monday, November 6.
