In HBO's new series, The Last of Us, based on the PlayStation video game of the same title, a fungus takes over the world, turning all of its hosts into flesh-eating zombies before they are destroyed from within. While that's the premise of many a horror story, the show's main-title sequence sees beauty in the multiplying and deadly organism as well as imagery, with the different images resolving into cities, maps and ultimately, a portrait of the main characters: Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay), the 14-year-old girl he's been tasked with protecting.
The Last of Us' main title sequence is drawn directly from the video game, as is the haunting score, which was composed and performed for both game and show by Argentinian musician and producer Gustavo Santaolalla.
