In Disney Plus' new series American Born Chinese, high-school student Jin Wang (Ben Wang) just wants to go to school and fit in like everybody else. He's trying to do exactly that when he's introduced to Wei-Chin (former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu), who's allegedly just arrived from China. Jin soon learns that his new friend is actually the child of a god – and accordingly he can really kick some ass. The two of them run into all sorts of mythological Chinese characters as they fight for the fate of the world, with Jin serving as Wei-Chin's guide? Servant? Let's stick with guide, it sounds better.
The eight-episode series, based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, also stars freshly minted Oscar-winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan as well as Oscar-nominee Stephanie Hsu, all of whom starred in 2023 Best Picture Everything Everywhere All at Once. Besides that trio, the series also stars Ronny Chieng, Jimmy O. Yang, Ao Guang, James Hong, Leonard Wu, Poppy Liu, Lisa Lu and Rosalie Chang.
American Born Chinese is executive produced and showrun by Kelvin Yu (Bob's Burger's, Central Park). Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Short Term 12) directs and also executive produces along with Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Erin O'Malley, Asher Goldstein and Gene Luen Yang.
American Born Chinese premieres Wednesday, May 24 on Disney Plus.
