Residents of Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco can see larger-than-life murals of martial arts icon Bruce Lee painted across walls, starting Thursday, June 29. The murals are thanks to Max, which debuts season three of Lee-focused series, Warrior, that same day.
Each of the three murals, which offer interactive QR codes as part of the art, was unveiled Thursday with talent from the series present.
Located in Chinatown on Hester Street, New York's mural was created by Vincent Ballantine.
Los Angeles' mural, by Swank One, is downtown on Hope Street, close to the Convention Center and Crypto.com arena.
In San Francisco, the art is in Chinatown on Clay Street with the art done by Vogue + Agana.
The series – a martial arts drama set in 1870s San Francisco Chinatown – is streaming on Max after first running on Cinemax.
“Seeing Warrior return for our third season during this 50th anniversary year for my father is just the ultimate celebration of his legacy,” said Shannon Lee, executive producer and president of the Bruce Lee Foundation, in a statement. “I couldn't be more proud of our show, our cast and our crew. The impact our show continues to have and the entertainment it continues to serve up and celebrating through art and interactivity in three cities across the country all at once is just an amazing way for a lot of people to get in on the fun!”
Besides being actually painted on the sides of buildings, the murals were made interactive through the use of web-based augmented reality (AR) technology. By scanning the QR code embedded with the artwork (or below), fans can tap into the Warrior AR Experience.
Additionally, through a partnership with the Chinese Historical Society of America, the Max multicultural and digital innovation teams created an AR walking tour anchored around key locations. This walking tour will allow fans to discover San Francisco's Chinatown “Through the Lens of the Blade.” The tour features content developed for the Warrior podcast turned into an experiential audio-scape to which users can listen while exploring Warrior-themed AR sites. Featuring weapons, historical objects, and experiences of the era, Max is incorporating soundbites from Shannon Lee and additional show talent. Fans can partake in the AR Experience in-person or virtually, expanding the effort to the entire country.
