Netflix led Thursday’s twice-delayed Oscar nominations with 18 mentions, 13 of which went to this year’s most-nominated film, Emilia Pérez.
Besides being nominated for both best picture and best international feature film, Emilia Pérez also scored nods for best director and best adapted screenplay for Jacques Audiard, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, as well as mentions for cinematography, film editing, makeup and hairstyling and sound. The movie’s music also impressed Oscar voters with the score and two original songs, “El Mal” and “Mi Camino,” all receiving nominations. Gascón made history as the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for an Oscar.
Netflix’s other five nominations were for documentary short film forThe Only Girl in the Orchestra; live action short film for Anuja; cinematography for Maria, starring Angelina Jolie as opera singer Maria Callas; best animated feature for Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl; and best song for The Six Triple Eight’s “The Journey,” which earned songwriter Diane Warren her 16th Oscar nomination.
Following Emilia Pérez with 10 nominations each was Brady Corbet’s three-and-a-half hour epic, The Brutalist, and John H. Chu’s elaborate musical Wicked.
The Brutalist stars Adrian Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones with 10 nominations, including best picture, best director, best actor for Brody, best supporting actor for Pearce and best supporting actress for Jones. The film also is nominated for original screenplay, cinematography, film editing, original score and production design.
Wicked, which was nominated for best picture, missed out in the director category but both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated best actress and best supporting actress, respectively. Wicked nabbed more mentions in the below-the-line categories of costume design, film editing, makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, sound and visual effects.
Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown and Vatican thriller Conclave each scored eight nominations, including best picture; best actor for respective leads Timothée Chalamet and Ralph Fiennes; and best supporting actress for Monica Barbaro, playing Dylan love and foil Joan Baez, and Isabella Rosellini, earning her first Oscar nomination playing a dissident nun. At 29, Chalamet is now the youngest man since James Dean posthumously in 1956 to be nominated for two Academy Awards.
A Complete Unknown also earned a best director nom for James Mangold, while Conclave missed in this category, and a best supporting actor nod for Edward Norton as folk founding father Pete Seger. A Complete Unknown also earned mentions for adapted screenplay, costume design and sound.
Conclave also was nominated for adapted screenplay, costume design, film editing, original score and production design.
Filling out the best-picture category were Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys and The Substance.
After winning the Palme D’Or at Cannes last May, Anora was seen as the early Oscar favorite, although those chances have seemed to fade as the season has worn on. Still, Anora scored a coveted best director nomination for Sean Baker, an expected best actress nod for Mikey Madison, and an audience favorite best supporting actor nomination for Yura Borisov, who plays a Russian thug with a heart. Anora also was nominated for original screenplay and film editing.
The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, built steam throughout awards season, culminating in Moore's win at the Golden Globes, where she gave an impressive speech. As a result, Moore is currently considered the best-actress frontrunner. Director Coralie Fargeat was the only woman to be nominated for best director this year. The Substance, which was heavy on body horror, also was nominated for original screenplay and makeup and hairstyling.
Giving Moore a run for her money will be I’m Still Here’s Fernanda Torres. Earlier this month, both actresses won a Golden Globe, because those awards split films into two categories – drama and musical/comedy. I’m Still Here, which hails from Brazil, also is nominated for international feature film, where it will go head to against Emilia Pérez as well as Denmark’s The Girl with the Needle, Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Lativa’s Flow, which also is nominated for best animated feature.
Sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two, starring Oscar nominee Chalamet, was likely hurt by its release in March 2024, when the previous year’s awards season was just wrapping. Besides its best-picture listing, Dune: Part Two notched nominations for cinematography, production design and visual effects, but was noticeably left out of the key acting, directing and writing categories.
Finally, Nickel Boys, which hasn’t yet been released to most audiences, also earned a nomination for adapted screenplay. The movie is based on Colson Whitehead’s critically acclaimed novel.
Joining Brody, Chalamet and Fiennes in the best actor category are Sing Sing’s Colman Domingo and The Apprentice’s Sebastian Stan. Domingo also was nominated best actor last year for his work in Netflix’s Rustin, making him the first back-to-back acting nominee since Denzel Washington for Fences in 2017 and Roman J. Israel, Esq. in 2018. Stan was nominated for two Golden Globes this year for both The Apprentice and A Different Man. At the Globes, Stan won for A Different Man, which only received one Oscar nom: for makeup and hairstyling.
Stan’s co-star, Jeremy Strong, was nominated best supporting actor for playing young Trump’s mentor, attorney Roy Cohn. Joining Strong is his Succession co-star, Kieran Culkin, for A Real Pain. Culkin is the front-runner in this category after having secured most of the major wins leading up to Oscars. Strong and Culkin join Borisov, Norton and Pearce.
The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live Sunday, March 2, at 4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET on ABC and Hulu.
