HBO/Max celebrated September 26 – known as “Outbreak Day” to fans of video game and TV series The Last of Us – by dropping a teaser trailer for season 2 and three new pieces of key art featuring Joe (Pedro Pascal), Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). In the game and the show, the cordyceps outbreak that wipes out most of humanity and civilization first hits on September 26.
Season two picks up five years after season one left off. The teaser, which is mostly set in Joel and Ellie’s new home in Jackson, Wyo., is accompanied by a light version of Pearl Jam’s “Future Days,” one of the songs that plays a big role in the video-game sequel, The Last of Us, part 2. The only narration is voiceover by Catherine O’Hara, who apparently plays Joel’s new therapist. None of the other characters speak during the teaser, which starts off peacefully and gets increasingly harrowing.
Below are the three new pieces of key art that HBO also dropped Thursday, featuring the season two's three main characters:
O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) and Dever join the cast this season along with Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, American Fiction) as Isaiah, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Returning are Gabriel Luna as Joel’s brother, Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as his wife, Maria, who serves as a leader of the Jackson community.
The Last Of Us is written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us video game, produced by Naughty Dog). The series is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and is also executive produced by Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, and Evan Wells with collaboration from production companies PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint and Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us returns to HBO and Max in 2025.
