Just a few weeks before the kick off of the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026, Fox Sports is reminding fans just how far soccer in the United States has come.

In the summer of 1994, the United States was preparing to host the FIFA World Cup for the first time. Marking another first was that the host country did not have a top-tier professional soccer league.

Aiming to change that, U.S. Soccer decided to assemble a national team, hiring coach Bora Milutinović from Serbia to assemble a squad that had a chance of not being booted out in the first round.

Fox Sports’ documentary, Summer of ‘94, tells that story. Produced by Fox Sports alongside Imagine Documentaries, Delirio Films, Dick’s Sporting Goods’ Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios, Copper Pot Pictures and Stand Together, Summer of ‘94 premieres Saturday, May 23, just 19 days before the first ball drops in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
