How Plains of Yonder Played Cats’ Cradle with ‘Time Bandits’
INTROSTORYGALLERYCREDITS
Emmy-nominated studio produced 10 separate sequences for Apple TV Plus series.

For Apple TV Plus’ reimagining of Terry Gilliam’s classic ‘80s fantasy film, Time Bandits, Seattle -based Plains of Yonder designed not one, not two, but ten separate main title sequences, each one containing interesting objects specific to that episode.

The sequences definitely have an ‘80s vibe, with somewhat out-of-focus graphics, a synth-based soundtrack and an ever-evolving kaleidoscope of “odd and quirky objects,” according to Plains of Yonder founders and directors Katrina Crawford and Mark Bashore. The sequence was created in collaboration between Plains of Yonder and Emmy-nominated Irish motion designer and director Cian McKenna.

Each sequence wraps up with a pair of detached and ghostly hands capturing the show’s title in a cat’s cradle, suggesting the notion that the strings of time and space are being manipulated by an all-powerful, if disembodied, being.

Plains of Yonder, a two-time Emmy nominee for its main titles for HBO’s White Lotus (season two) and Prime Video’s Rings of Power (season one), also posted a fun and fast-moving behind-the-scenes video, set to Rocky Horror Picture Show’s “Time Warp,” to show viewers how it all came to be:

Time Bandits is executive produced by Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris and stars Lisa Kudrow, Waititi and Clement. It debuted July 24, 2024, on Apple TV Plus, but was not renewed for additional seasons.
